How to Find Resellers in Italy for Your Software

By Giuseppe Giorlando · Updated 2026-10-27 · 9 min read

To find resellers in Italy, start from the customers you want to reach and work backwards: list the Italian firms those customers already buy software and services from, score them on fit, and approach the best ten with a partner offer written for their business. Directories, distributors and trade events help you build the list, but the resellers that end up selling are almost always the ones already trusted by your target buyers.

This guide is for international SaaS and software vendors that want an Italian reseller channel. It covers which kinds of resellers exist in Italy, where to source candidates, how to shortlist them with a simple scorecard, and how to make the first contact count.

What "reseller" means in the Italian software market

In Italy the word "rivenditore" covers several very different businesses. Mixing them up is the fastest way to waste the first six months.

Reseller type What they do Best fit for What they expect from you
Value-added reseller (VAR) Resells licences bundled with setup, training and first-line support Products with a clear price list and some configuration Margin, deal protection, Italian-language enablement
Managed service provider (MSP) Runs IT for small and mid-sized companies on monthly contracts Security, backup, collaboration, IT management tools Multi-tenant management, monthly billing, recurring margin
Vertical software house Sells and supports its own management software (ERP, accounting, sector tools) to a niche Add-ons and integrations to the software they already sell An integration, a simple bundle, no conflict with their core product
System integrator acting as reseller Implements enterprise platforms and resells the licences as part of a project Products that need integration work and sell to mid-market or enterprise A services business case and a named partner manager
Distributor (wholesaler) Holds the contracts with hundreds of resellers and handles credit, billing and logistics Vendors that already have demand and need reach and billing infrastructure Volume, marketing funds, a product their resellers ask for

Two features of the Italian market shape the search. First, it is strongly regional: a reseller that dominates one industrial district may have no presence two regions away. Second, most small and mid-sized companies rely on a long-standing IT supplier or software house, so the reseller is often the real gatekeeper to the customer. That is why the wider guide on how to sell software in Italy treats partner choice as the main entry decision, not a detail.

If your product needs real integration work, read the dedicated guide to system integrators in Italy as well: integrators are recruited differently from resellers.

Where to find reseller candidates in Italy

No single list contains the right resellers. A good long list combines several sources, each with its own bias.

1. Your own customers and lost deals

Ask your Italian customers, trial users and lost prospects one question: who handles your software and IT today? The answers give you names that already sit in front of your buyers. This is the highest-quality source and the one most vendors skip.

2. Partner directories of adjacent vendors

Most large platforms publish partner locators filtered by country and region: ERP, CRM, accounting, cloud, security and collaboration vendors. Pick the platforms your product integrates with or sits next to, filter for Italy and your target regions, and you get firms that already resell software to your kind of customer. Third-party partner directories work the same way, but treat their listings as a starting point and verify each firm.

3. Vertical software houses

In many sectors (manufacturing, retail, hospitality, professional services, construction) Italian companies run on management software from a local software house. Those software houses sell, install and support their product, and they look for add-ons that make their offer more complete. If your product complements their core system, they can become a strong reseller with almost no competition for their attention.

4. Distributors and their reseller networks

Italian ICT distributors work with large numbers of resellers and run events, catalogues and marketplaces for them. A distributor rarely creates demand for an unknown product, but once you have a few active resellers, it can give you billing, credit management and reach. Use distributors to scale a channel, not to start one.

5. Events, associations and communities

Italian innovation and ICT trade events, industry associations and channel publications are where resellers meet vendors. Use them to meet candidates already on your list, not to collect business cards at random. Channel news sites are also useful research: they report which resellers are adding new vendors and which ones are growing.

6. LinkedIn and outbound research

Search for owners, sales directors and technical directors of Italian IT services firms in your target regions and sectors. Check their customer references, the vendors listed on their website and their recent posts. This turns a company name into a person and a reason to talk.

How to shortlist: a scorecard for Italian resellers

A long list of 40 to 60 firms is normal. Score each one on the same criteria before you contact anyone, and only approach the top ten to fifteen.

Criterion Question to answer Score 0–2
Customer overlap Do they already sell to the companies and sectors you target?
Adjacent portfolio Do they sell products next to yours (same buyer, same budget) without a direct competitor?
Sales capacity Do they have people who sell, not only technicians who install?
Technical capacity Can they set up, support and renew your product without your team on every call?
Regional coverage Do they cover the regions where your best Italian prospects are?
Recurring-revenue habit Do they already sell subscriptions, or only one-off projects and hardware?
Openness to new vendors Have they added a vendor in the last two years, and is it visible on their site or in the press?
Access Do you have a warm path to an owner or director (customer, peer, mutual contact)?

Firms scoring 12 or more out of 16 go to the first wave. Anything below 8 waits. Write down why each firm got its score: when the first wave answers, you will learn which criteria really predict interest and adjust. The full method behind this scorecard, including the ideal partner profile, is in the guide to partner recruitment strategy.

How to approach Italian resellers

Italian resellers receive vendor pitches every week. The ones that get a reply share three traits: they are specific, they speak the reseller's economics, and they come from a person the reseller can call.

Prepare before the first message

Make the first contact personal

Write to the owner or sales director, not to a generic info address. Mention a customer type they serve, the adjacent product they already sell and why your product makes their offer stronger. Ask for a 30-minute call, not a partnership. A warm introduction from a shared customer or contact multiplies the reply rate.

Run the first meeting as a qualification

Use the first call to understand their customers, their sales team and how they decide on new vendors. Then present the offer. Before leaving, agree on one concrete next step: a technical session, a joint account review or a pilot with a named customer.

Sign small and activate fast

Start with a simple agreement and a 90-day joint plan instead of a long contract. Train their salespeople, join the first customer meetings and help close the first deal yourself. A reseller that closes one deal in the first quarter stays active; a reseller that signs and waits usually goes quiet.

A real example from the Italian market

For Cegid, as described in our case studies, the goal was a strategic reseller to accelerate growth in Italy. G2Market ran the recruitment end to end: market mapping, target shortlisting, executive outreach and commercial negotiation. One of the most relevant system integrators in Italy signed as an official reseller. The method was the one in this guide: a short list built around the customers Cegid wanted to reach, approached at executive level with an offer built for the partner's business.

Common mistakes when looking for resellers in Italy

FAQ

How many resellers do I need to start in Italy?

Three to five active resellers are enough to prove the channel. It is better to work closely with a few partners that close deals than to sign thirty that never sell. Add more once you know which profile works.

Should I start with a distributor or with resellers?

Usually with resellers. Distributors add reach and billing capacity once demand exists, but they rarely create demand for a product their resellers have never heard of. Bring a distributor in when a few resellers are already selling.

What margin do Italian resellers expect?

There is no single number: it depends on the product, the price point and how much work the reseller does. Resellers that provide setup, training and support expect more than those that only take the order. Compare your offer with what they earn on the adjacent products they already sell.

Do I need an Italian contract and Italian materials?

You need materials in Italian for the reseller's salespeople and customers, and a contract they can read and accept easily. Many resellers will also check that billing works with Italian electronic invoicing before they commit.

Can someone find and recruit Italian resellers for us?

Yes. A fractional partner manager with an Italian network can map the market, build the shortlist, run executive outreach and activate the first resellers, then hand the channel over to an internal hire. If you want to talk about your Italian channel, book a discovery call.
