Digital Agencies in Italy as a Sales Channel for SaaS
Digital and eCommerce agencies are one of the fastest sales channels into Italy for software that sits inside a website, an online shop or a marketing stack, because Italian mid-market companies rarely choose that technology alone: they ask the agency that builds and runs their digital projects. A vendor that wins a small group of the right agencies gets introduced to their client base with the agency's credibility, without hiring a local sales team first.
This guide is for international SaaS and technology vendors that want to use the agency channel in Italy. It covers which agencies matter, what they expect from a vendor, how to structure the offer and how to run the first ninety days. For the wider country picture, start with the guide to selling software in Italy.
Why agencies matter more in Italy than in many markets
Italy's economy is built on small and medium-sized companies, many of them family-owned, and most of them do not have a large internal digital team. Their website, online shop, marketing automation and analytics are usually designed and run by an external agency, often one they have worked with for years. When that client needs a new tool, the agency recommends it, configures it and stays responsible for it.
That creates three conditions that favour the agency channel:
- Trust is already in place. The agency has a long relationship with the decision-maker. A recommendation from the agency often carries more weight than a vendor's sales pitch.
- The agency controls the project. In eCommerce, MarTech and customer experience, the agency often writes the technical proposal, so the tool it proposes is the tool that gets bought.
- The market is fragmented. There are many small and mid-sized agencies spread across regions, from Milan and the north-east to Rome and the south. A vendor cannot reach that many clients directly, but a handful of well-chosen agencies can.
This is also the reason why the agency channel can open Italy quickly. When ShipSafely needed a fast, capital-efficient way to enter the Italian market, G2Market designed an agency-led entry strategy: agency partners were recruited and enabled as the primary distribution channel, and the Italian market opened and started generating traction through that network.
Which Italian agencies to target
"Agency" covers very different businesses. Choosing the wrong type is the most common reason an agency program in Italy produces signed agreements but no deals.
| Agency type | What they do for clients | Good fit for | What they need from you |
|---|---|---|---|
| eCommerce agencies | Build and run online shops, integrations with ERP and logistics, ongoing optimisation | Commerce platforms, payments, shipping, search, reviews, catalogue and marketplace tools | Implementation documentation, a sandbox, a technical contact, services revenue on each project |
| Web and digital agencies | Websites, apps, UX, hosting and maintenance | CMS, hosting, forms, accessibility, analytics, consent tools | Simple packaging they can resell or include in a maintenance contract |
| Performance and marketing agencies | Paid media, SEO, email, CRM and automation | MarTech, data, attribution, affiliate and partnership technology | Results they can show the client, training for account managers, co-marketing |
| Creative and communication agencies | Brand, content, social, campaigns | Content tools, DAM, social and video software | A light referral model; they rarely implement |
| Specialised consultancies | CRM, data, customer experience | Enterprise MarTech and CX platforms | Certification paths, a services practice, joint enterprise selling |
Two practical filters help in Italy. First, look for agencies that already work with technology complementary to yours: an agency that builds shops on a given commerce platform is a natural candidate for a payments or shipping tool. Second, check the size of the delivery team, not just the brand: a twelve-person agency with three developers who know your category can be worth more than a famous creative agency with no technical staff.
If your product needs deep integration with ERP or back-office systems, agencies are usually not enough on their own; those projects belong to integrators, covered in the guide to system integrators in Italy.
What Italian agencies expect from a vendor
Italian agency owners are approached by many vendors. The ones they keep working with share a few traits.
Revenue beyond the referral fee
A commission alone rarely moves an agency. What matters most is the services revenue the agency earns by implementing, configuring and managing your product for its clients. If your own team does the implementation, the agency has little reason to recommend you. A good offer combines a referral or resale margin with clear room for paid agency services.
A person, not a portal
Italian business runs on relationships. Agencies expect a named partner manager who speaks Italian, joins the first client calls and answers quickly when a project gets stuck. A partner portal and a sign-up form are useful later; they do not replace a person at the start.
Material in Italian they can use the same day
A short Italian deck, a one-page product sheet, a demo account and two or three examples of the business case for Italian clients are enough to start. Long certification programs before the first deal slow down exactly the small, fast agencies you want first.
No conflict with your direct team
If an agency introduces a client and then sees your direct sales team close the deal without it, the relationship is over. Write simple rules of engagement before signing the first agency: how an opportunity is registered, how long it is protected and who works the account.
Local terms
Contracts and invoicing should fit Italian practice: Italian or bilingual agreements, clear payment terms and, if the agency resells, clarity on who invoices the end client. Electronic invoicing is standard in Italy, so agree early on how the agency will bill and be paid.
Designing the offer for Italian agencies
The structure of an agency program is covered in depth in the guide to building an agency partner program. For Italy, the choices that matter most are these:
- Commercial model. Start with a referral or revenue-share model that is easy to understand. Resale (the agency buys and invoices the client) suits agencies that already bundle software into maintenance contracts; offer it as an option, not the default.
- Services role. Decide what the agency does (setup, configuration, integration, ongoing management) and what your team does (product support, escalation). Write it down.
- Entry requirements. Keep the bar low to start: a signed agreement, one person trained, one target client identified. Add tiers and certifications once you know which agencies sell.
- Support package. A named contact, a demo environment, joint calls on the first opportunities and a small co-marketing budget or a joint event for the agency's clients.
- Protection. A deal registration process and a fixed protection period for agency-sourced opportunities.
Where to find agency candidates in Italy
The same sources used to find resellers in Italy work for agencies, with a few additions:
- Your existing Italian customers. Ask who built their site or shop. The same agency names come back quickly.
- Partner directories of complementary platforms. Commerce platforms, CMS and MarTech vendors publish agency directories filtered by country. Agencies listed there already work with partner programs.
- Agency rankings and associations. National associations of communication and digital agencies, and eCommerce industry reports, list the active players by specialty.
- Events and community. Italian eCommerce and digital marketing events in Milan and Rome are where agency founders meet vendors.
- LinkedIn research. Search for partnership or technology roles inside agencies and look at the case studies on their websites to confirm what they actually build.
Score each candidate on fit with your product, client profile, delivery capacity and existing technology partners, then approach the best ten personally.
A 90-day plan to launch the agency channel in Italy
| Weeks | What happens | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Define the agency profile, prepare the Italian material and the offer, build a list of 30 to 40 candidates | One-page program, target list, scored shortlist |
| 3 to 6 | Personal outreach to the top candidates, first meetings with agency founders | Five to eight qualified conversations |
| 6 to 8 | Sign the first three to five agencies; role-based training for the people who will pitch | Signed agreements, trained contacts |
| 8 to 12 | Joint review of each agency's client book, two or three target clients each, joint calls | First registered opportunities |
| 12 | Review: which agencies are active, what blocked the others, what to change before recruiting more | Decision on scaling |
An agency is active when it has included your product in at least one client proposal and registered an opportunity. If an agency has not done that after ninety days, find out why before recruiting more agencies of the same type.
Checklist: is your product ready for Italian agencies?
- There is real implementation or management work an agency can charge for
- You have an Italian-speaking person who will own the agency relationships
- Deck, product sheet and demo are available in Italian
- The commercial model fits on one page
- Rules of engagement with your direct team are written down
- Contracts and invoicing work for Italian companies
- You know which three to five agencies you would sign first, and why
Common mistakes
- Recruiting famous agencies instead of fitting ones. Brand-name agencies are busy and slow to adopt new tools; specialised mid-sized agencies often move first.
- Treating agencies as affiliates. A link and a commission do not create a channel in Italy.
- Launching without a local owner. Agencies notice quickly when nobody answers in Italian.
- Signing too many agencies at once. Five active agencies beat thirty logos on a partner page.
- Ignoring what happened before. In a relationship market, a previous vendor that competed with its agencies leaves a memory. Ask about it.
Who runs the agency channel
The agency channel needs someone who knows how Italian agencies make money, already has relationships with agency owners and can work in Italian. Giuseppe Giorlando, founder of G2Market, was part of the two-person initial team behind BigCommerce's success in Italy, building partnerships that worked for partners, merchants and the vendor. G2Market has also opened Italy through agencies for ShipSafely and ran a first-of-its-kind agency-technology pilot for Impact.com. For vendors that are not ready to hire a full-time country partner manager, a fractional partner manager can recruit and activate the first agencies and hand over a working channel.

FAQ
Are agencies a good sales channel for SaaS in Italy?
Yes, for software that agencies implement or manage: eCommerce, MarTech, analytics, CMS and customer experience tools. Italian SMEs rely on external agencies for digital projects, so the agency's recommendation often decides the purchase. For back-office or ERP-heavy products, system integrators are usually a better fit.
Should Italian agencies refer or resell my software?
Start with referral or revenue share, which is easier to launch and to explain. Offer resale to agencies that already bundle software into their maintenance contracts and want to invoice the client directly. Many programs end up supporting both.
How many agencies do I need to start in Italy?
Three to five active agencies with the right profile are enough to validate the channel. Recruit more only after you know which type of agency produces opportunities and why.
Do I need Italian-speaking staff to work with Italian agencies?
For the first phase, yes. Agency owners expect meetings, material and support in Italian, and the first joint client calls usually happen in Italian. A local or fractional partner manager can cover this before you hire a full team.
What is the difference between agencies and system integrators in Italy?
Agencies build and run websites, shops and marketing for their clients and move quickly. System integrators implement enterprise software and integrate it with ERP and back-office systems, with longer projects and stricter requirements. Many vendors use agencies for the mid-market and integrators for larger accounts.
